Ellis Island

Ellis Island was the biggest immigration office in America at the time it was in use. About 40% of Americans are descendants of people that went through the Ellis Island immigration office. The Island was active as immigration office from 1892 to 1954 and processed about 12 million people of which most was processed before 1924. The first immigrants came for the British Isles. The second wave of immigrants came from western Europe manly Germans, Scandinavians, and Dutch. the third wave came from southern Europe, like Spain and Italy. and then the forth came from eastern Europe.

The Statue of liberty was built in 1886 by Auguste Bartholdi and given by the French government to the American government. A gift of eternal friendship to commemorate US independents for British rule.

I do have a relative that went to the US in 1870. Niels C. Lie she emigrated from Norway, but Ellis Island was not built.

The most famous person that has gone through Ellis Island is Albert Einstein. Einstein was born in 1879 in Ullm in Bavaria to a Jewish family. He is known as one of the smartest individuals that have walked this earth. He arrived at Ellis Island on the 2 of April 1921. he had left his Fatherland because of the tension whit the NSDAP, Nationalist social German workers party.

In the article «Why America is still the land of opportunity» the author arguments for that the American dream is not what people think. the American dream is that you can become an entrepreneur.

Lingua Franca

The English language has expanded form a tiny language on a part of a tiny island, to dominate the world.

The expansion of this language stems from three main reasons. One, the British empire. Two, American influence after world war two. And three, globalisation has created a demand for a lingua franca.

The British monarchs supported sailors in the late fifteen hundreds to explore the world, and later colonies the lands they had explored. As a result of this the and the industrial revolution the British, at its pick, controlled the one-fourth of the world and was the world’s superpower. After world war one the British empire was exhausted, and a new country took its plays as the world’s superpower. the Americans with there culture, science, and Marshal help spread the English language in Europa and later the world. later in the 1980s, the internet was created and globalisation became a bigger factor. this again created a demand for a lingua franca, a language that all could understand and speak.

Sins so many speak English, different accents has emerged, just like the Roman language. today French, Spanish, Italian, Roman, and pierogis all derived from Latin. all tho they can understand some of the other languages they are different.  Take Jamaica, for instance, it sounds like they speak English but they have some words that are English and some that form the native languages of Jamaica.

The language for South Afrika has a weird mix between Duch settlers, English colonialists, and African tribes. in addition, there are a lot of different words that are different. for example, trainers in English is tekkis in South African or traffic light in English is a robot in South African.

The language of Indian or more specifically  Indian English is a mix between English colonialists and many different Indian languages. The language has a sort of «rapedo» sound, and can best be described as tikking.

You’re Broke

Our teacher wanted us to understand how it is to be poor. Therefore we played a game called Spent. In the game, you have a low wage job and most survive a month with all that a family man must provide. Unless you sacrifice writing it is almost impossible to not go into debt.

The game gives you info about poverty in America. there are 14 million poor people in America, and it explains the problems they face on a daily basis. It does also remind me as a Norwegian citizen how lucky I am with the Norwegian welfare state.

Climate young

Today in class we were in India and Israel. We skyped with students from both India and Israel. This was both fun, interesting and educational. The subject of the conversation was climate change and global warming. As both countries are south of Norway and are closer climate-wise they faced many of the same problems. They had problems with extreme heat and water. In India, there was a flood near a temple where people prayed for Shiva. The people in the temple survived, but the people around died. 130 died, and 70000 pilgrims where stranded on a mountain.

In Australia, climate change has forced koala bears to go to the cities and scavenger for water. Two young girls from South Australia expressed that the young people in Australia are sincerely concerned. They want the government to ban plastic bags in all of Australia. Some children from Bali have worked with the same issue and been successful. They stod at an airport and asked for signatures and went on a hunger strike just like Gandhi with the slogan «by, by the plastic bag». And now there are no plastic bags in Bali.

Young people in Belgium are also working for the Climate. On this Friday they are planning to be civil disobedient as a protest to their governments’ policies on climate change. Just like Mahatma Gandhi and dr. Martin Luther King, they are protesting in peace, by doing what every child wants, dropping school.

The Incarceration of The Black Population

«lest look at the statistics, America has 5% of the world’s population. And 25% of the worlds incarcerated «- Obama

after the American civil war, someone had to rebuild the south. That, someone, was the «negro». The newly released black man was imprisoned to become a modern slave. The American prison system is a big labour camp. american corporations just the chip labour in industries and manufacturing. And this is hurting the black population the most. 40.2% of people in American prisons are black, while they just are 6.5 %of the American population. this fact is absolutely scary and the US government most reform the prison system and polices forces.
